Mohammad Sadegh Mohammadi Configuration of wireless nodes inside, on, or in the vicinity of human body forms a body area network (WBAN). Applications of WBANs include medical implantable or wearable nodes for measuring physiological signals or performing therapeutic treatments, dynamic measurements in the musculoskeletal system for scientific or sport research, fitness, or games, or everyday personal care applications. Reliability of wireless links plays a crucial role in all applications of WBANs. Nonetheless, several factors that are unique to WBANs compared to other traditionally recognized wireless networks pose a major challenge to achieve reliable communications. Indeed, achieving reliable communications in WBANs requires optimal efficiency with low complexity. Any potential solution should rely on extremely limited energy resources to defeat a volatile channel corrupted with noise, harsh fading, and body-dependent reflective, dispersive, and refractive random effects. The problem has been investigated from different points of view considering different layers of the communication protocol stack and multiple techniques have been deployed that rely on the theory of statistical signal processing. The proposed schemes include PHY/MAC optimization, sophisticated coding and error recovery mechanisms, and a novel innovative sampling framework, to achieve optimal transmission efficiency at the transmitter nodes. Maintaining a low computational demand at the transmitter nodes is a key property in all the proposed techniques.
